The Manager as a Coach

Interest and Need

The managers’ role has seen many changes over the years. The manager has become a valued member of the team with an active role in the development of the team helping team members to release their untapped potential, maximizing the performance level of the team. No, this is not done through pressure, but through a process of support and encouragement for each individual in the team. The manager has now become a coach for his team to enable them to out-perform their previous best.

 

Range and Objectives

This course is a mixture of instructor led discussion and delegate exercises to reinforce lessons learned. The delegates get to practice new techniques for coaching others whilst learning how the basic behavioral model can be applied in understanding and working with human behaviour.

 

Upon completion of this course delegates will be able to:

 

·        Describe the role of the coach and the difference between a coach and a mentor

·        Adopt a communication style that is non-confrontational, supportive and encouraging as a coach

·        Understand a basic human behaviour model and how this can be used to work better with those around them

·        Use a five step process for getting to the route cause of problems so that a permanent solution can be found

·        Use an eight step process for goal setting and for the assessment of achievement against targets set

·        Identify when their subject has taken the full responsibility for their own levels of achievement

·        Coach others to levels that they might not necessarily be able to achieve for themselves.

 

Pre-requisites

This course is intended for managers and supervisors that have staff reporting to them. This course will also be valuable to anyone about to take on a supervisory role.
