Cooperative Learning

Training for Results

Helping people to take responsibility and improve performance through Cooperative Learning.

Cooperative Learning is about People Developing People by:

ü  Acknowledging that we sink or swim together

ü  Promoting Face to Face interaction

ü  Preventing ‘social loafing’

ü  Developing interpersonal & small group skills

ü  Reflecting on performance

The Results Method of training is based upon Cooperative Learning because it promotes:

  • Learning, achievement and inclusiveness
  • Enhanced learner satisfaction
  • Increased learner retention
  • Social skills and confidence
  • Development of skills in oral and written communication
  • Self-esteem
  • Diversity and respect for others.

Cooperative efforts are more productive and sustainable than competitive and individualistic efforts for the following reasons:

1. Positive Interdependence acknowledges that we ‘sink or swim’ together as:

Every member’s efforts are required and indispensable for group success and

Each member has a unique contribution to make to the joint effort based on their resources, role and task responsibilities.

2. Face to Face Interaction promotes each other’s success by:

      Teaching one’s knowledge to others

      Explaining how to solve problems

      Checking for understanding

      Discussing new ideas

      Connecting present with past learning.

3. Individual & Group Accountability promotes each other’s success (and prevents ‘social loafing’) by:

Keeping the group size small to maintain greater individual accountability

One to one reviews and feedback

      Group observations and feedback

      Peer review

      Peer coaching

4. Interpersonal & Small Group Skills are developed and practiced, such as:

      Leadership

      Decision making

      Trust building

      Communication

      Conflict resolution.

5. Group Processing causes people to reflect on:

      How well goals are achieved

      Maintaining effective working relationships

What member behaviours are helpful (or not)

Deciding what behaviours to preserve or change.
